The Importance of Having a Qualified Inspector

When looking for a third-party inspection company to inspect your material handling & safety assets, the single most important question you can ask is "are your inspectors qualified?". Ultimately, the company that you hire to inspect your assets is determining if it is safe to operate. An unqualified inspector is not only untrained, but can be extremely dangerous to you, your employees, and even damage your equipment.

The Difference Between Competent and Qualified

OSHA defines a competent person as someone who is "capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions . . . who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them". They go on to define a qualified person as someone "who, by possession of a recognized degree, certification, or professional standing, or who by extensive knowledge, training, and experience, has successfully demonstrated his ability to solve or resolve problems relating to the subject matter, the work, or the project".

So What Is a Qualified Inspector?

A qualified inspector has demonstrated their knowledge of the industry and the equipment that they are inspecting either by going through training and having some sort of degree or certification, or by extensive experience in the field.

What To Look For In An Inspector

You want to make sure that the company you hire to inspect your material handling & safety assets is doing the right thing and hiring qualified inspectors, but how? Before they even set foot in your facility, ask for company and employee references, safety records, licenses, and a list of qualifications. You also want to verify that they have qualified liability insurance. Lastly, you want to verify that their technicians have at least 2,000 field hours related to the maintaining, servicing, repairing, modifying, and functional testing of cranes.
